The Boston Red Sox need to add a new second baseman this offseason and one insider believes the club will land arguably the best one available in free agency.

Second base currently is a major point of weakness for the Red Sox. Boston had Trevor Story manning the position in 2022, but last season it was more of a platoon spot.

It has been rumored that the Red Sox would be looking to land a new second baseman this offseason and The Athletic's Jim Bowden predicted that Boston will sign three-time All-Star Whit Merrifield this offseason.

"Merrifield made his third All-Star team this year, slashing .272/.318/.382 with 27 doubles, 11 home runs, and 26 stolen bases," Bowden said. "His versatility -- he can play both second base and the outfield -- increases his free-agent value. In his career, Merrifield has led the league in doubles, triples, sacrifice flies, and in hits twice, and stolen bases three times.

"To me, his best team fits are the Red Sox and (Philadelphia Phillies). I think he'd get more playing time with Boston (at second base and in left field) and would have an easier path to becoming a starter."

Merrifield has been mentioned as a fit for the Red Sox on multiple occasions this offseason already. This isn't surprising. He arguably is the best second baseman available in free agency and could help Boston in a major way. The Red Sox likely are looking for a short-term fix at second base with top prospect Marcelo Mayer expected to make the jump to the big leagues soon and Merrifield could be the perfect option.

He spent the 2023 campaign with the Toronto Blue Jays and earned his third All-Star nod. Merrifield is 34-years-old and likely won't cost too much. It wouldn't be surprising to see a move happen shortly.
