NL West Club Nabs Former Red Sox Hurler As He Attempts To Work His Way Back Up To MLB
One former member of the Boston Red Sox is looking to revitalize his career.
Former Boston Red Sox reliever Fernando Abad has had a roller coaster of a 2023 season already and it continued Tuesday afternoon as he re-signed with the Colorado Rockies to a minor league contract, according to the MLB transaction log.
Abad began his big league career in 2010 as a member of the Houston Astros. The lefty spent the first three years of his MLB career with the Astros and compiled a 5.10 ERA across 88 appearances. Since 2012, Abad has bounced around the league and has spent time with the Washington Nationals, Oakland Athletics, Minnesota Twins, Boston Red Sox, San Francisco Giants, Baltimore Orioles, and the Rockies.
The 37-year-old signed with the Rockies to a minor league contract ahead of the 2023 campaign and after shining at the Triple-A made was called up to the big leagues for the first time since 2021. Abad compiled a 1.69 ERA in Triple-A but struggled in three big league appearances with Colorado pitching to a 10.13 ERA in just 2 2/3 innings pitched.
Abad was released by the Rockies on May 24 but now is back with the club. The lefty is an 11-year veteran who may find himself in the big leagues once again at some point this season. Over his career, he has compiled a 3.82 ERA in 403 appearances. Abad impressed at the Triple-A level so hopefully that can carry over to the big leagues once again. His ERA with the Rockies may not be pretty so far this season, but it is in an extremely small sample size.
There's no way to know if he will play a large with the Rockies moving forward, but it can never hurt to add veteran depth at the minor league level.
