Pirates Star Outfielder May Make Sense If Red Sox Want To Make Big Splash In 2023
If the Boston Red Sox want to make a big splash in 2023, it may be through a trade.
Boston seemingly was tied to anyone and everyone who was somewhat available this past offseason. Whether through free agency or through trade, Boston was busy.
One of the biggest players who was in trade rumors all offseason was Pittsburgh Pirates star outfielder Bryan Reynolds, although he never was dealt. Boston was connected to Reynolds at one point, but Pittsburgh never traded the 28-year-old and attempted to come to terms on an extension before the season.
The Pirates and Reynolds have yet to come to terms on a new deal and if that continues, there's a real possibility that he gets traded before the 2023 season comes to a close. If Pittsburgh opts to deal Reynolds, Boston should be first in line -- especially after the way he has performed at Fenway Park this season.
Boston and Pittsburgh will conclude a three-game series Wednesday afternoon and Reynolds already has made his mark. Reynolds has been a thorn in the Red Sox's side so far throughout the series and collected six hits across the first two games alone. The 28-year-old clubbed three home runs, drove in four runs, and scored four runs as Pittsburgh won each of the first two games of the series.
So far this season Reynolds has been one of the most impressive outfielders in all of baseball. The 28-year-old is slashing an eye-popping .429/.455/1.048 to go along with a league-leading four home runs and six RBIs. Reynolds also is leading the league with 22 total bases so far this season.
Boston's outfield has been a high point for the club so far this season with Alex Verdugo, Masataka Yoshida, and Adam Duvall but it could never hurt to add even more talent into the mix. Reynolds is looking for an extension but is under team control until the 2026 season. If Boston were to opt for a big move to not only help the club this season, but for the foreseeable future, a trade for Reynolds may make perfect sense, especially after his impressive series at Fenway Park.
