The Boston Red Sox could end up surprising.

Boston still needs to add to the starting rotation and there has been plenty of speculation that the club could sign Texas Rangers postseason star Jordan Montgomery.

The 31-year-old has shined over the last few years and has taken a massive step forward. He is one of the top starters available and would make a lot of sense for the Red Sox.

While this is the case, many have said that the Red Sox wouldn't meet his asking price. This hasn't stopped rumors from swirling. With each passing day that Montgomery remains available, it's more likely the price will drop.

The other club that has been mentioned with the Red Sox on numerous occasions to sign Montgomery is the Rangers but general manager Chris Young threw some cold water on a possible move, according to The Dallas Morning News' Evan Grant.

“I don’t think there are any additions coming at this point,” Young said as transcribed by Grant. "While he maintained that the Rangers will 'keep an open mind' on free agents (including Montgomery), he also noted that long-term uncertainty regarding the team’s television contract 'is real' and has impacted spending this offseason — even on the heels of a World Series win."

If the Rangers are out of the Montgomery sweepstakes it would just make a move easier for Boston. At this point, a move almost makes too much sense for the Red Sox. Boston still needs a starter and Montgomery is just sitting there waiting for an opportunity.
