Red Sox All-Star Predicted To Be Dealt At Trade Deadline To Phillies
The Boston Red Sox's bullpen could look different by the time the 2024 Major League Baseball Trade Deadline comes around.
Boston has been in a plethora of trade rumors lately. The biggest storyline that has popped up regarding the bullpen is the future of All-Star closer Kenley Jansen.
Jansen joined Boston in free agency ahead of the 2023 campaign and impressed while becoming the club's lone All-Star. The veteran closer finished the season with a 3.63 ERA to go along with 29 saves.
Boston seems to be looking for ways to lower payroll and Jansen has popped up as a possible trade candidate because he's set to earn $16 million in 2024. Jansen has been linked to multiple clubs but still is with the Red Sox.
It's unclear where he will land now, but Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller predicted that he will be traded to the Philadelphia Phillies ahead of the trade deadline.
"Boston could have quite the intriguing fire sale if it is destined for another year in the (American League) East basement," Miller said. "In addition to Jansen, the Red Sox have Tyler O'Neill, Nick Pivetta, and Chris Martin on expiring deals, plus Lucas Giolito on a two-year deal with a $19M player option for 2025...
"There are a bunch of contenders who could end up wanting Jansen at the trade deadline, but Philadelphia is the one almost certain to be shopping for relief help. There has also been rumbling in recent weeks that the Phillies could trade for Jansen before the season even begins, but they'll probably see how things go with (Gregory Soto), José Alvarado, and Seranthony Domínguez before they make a big move."
Philadelphia has been linked to Jansen and a deal could make a lot of sense. Don't be surprised to see the two clubs get together on a move involving the star closer.
