Red Sox Bring Back Outfielder To Bolster Depth After One Season Away From Club
The Boston Red Sox brought an old friend back into the fold as the organization continues to add depth with the spring training underway.
The Red Sox signed outfielder Marcus Wilson to a minor-league contract Friday according to the transaction wire.
The 26-year-old originally joined the Red Sox organization in 2019 when he was traded from the Arizona Diamondbacks for catcher Blake Swihart.
Wilson was not able to reach the big-league club with the Red Sox and was eventually designated for assignment on July 30, 2021. He was picked up by the Seattle Mariners, where he finally reached Major League Baseball -- for a cup of coffee.
The defensive-minded depth piece was called up for three games last season with the Mariners when he logged his first hit, a walk and four strikeouts in six plate appearances.
He spent the majority of his time with Triple-A Tacoma. He hit .218 with 37 extra-base hits including 16 home runs, 47 RBIs and a .808 OPS in 91 games.
Wilson has solid pop in his bat and sound defense but has yet to hit for average at the higher levels. Still, Wilson is a quality depth piece that could fill in if needed this season.
