Red Sox Complete Reunion With Hurler From Last Year's Club As Depth Piece
The Boston Red Sox are in the middle of one of the most hectic weeks for the front office but still had time to make room for an old friend to rebuild his career back to where it was a year ago.
A member of last year's roster is back with the organization after a miserable season that has put his career in flux.
"The Red Sox have brought back Frank German on a minor-league contract," MassLive's Chris Cotillo tweeted Tuesday night. "German has been designated for assignment by (Chicago) White Sox and (Cincinnati) Reds this year and has really rough numbers in the minors. He's going to extended spring training in Fort Myers."
As Cotillo noted, the right-hander has been awful this season. German has an 8.55 ERA with a 29-to-16 strikeout-to-walk ratio, .345 batting average against and 2.30 WHIP in 20 innings this season across 20 games, 19 of which were in Triple-A.
Those numbers are a far cry from his production with the Red Sox organization last season. After a strong start with Double-A Portland, (3.18 ERA in 11 1/3 innings) he was promoted to Triple-A Worcester and started to look like a legitimate big-league high-leverage reliever in the making.
German posted a 2.58 ERA with a 46-to-16 strikeout-to-walk ratio, .154 batting average against and 0.94 WHIP in 38 1/3 innings for the WooSox before making his Major League debut in Boston last season.
It looks as if he will be going back to the drawing board down in Florida, which appears to be the best game plan at the moment. He won't be deemed depth this season for Boston but at only 25 years old, could factor in down the road.
