Red Sox Get Extremely Promising Injury Update With Opening Day Right Around Corner
The Boston Red Sox got some good news Friday afternoon.
Boston is going to look extremely different in 2023. The Red Sox lost some important pieces in free agency but also have plenty of new intriguing players on the roster. One of the biggest question marks surrounding the team heading into 2023 is the middle infield with Xander Bogaerts now playing for the San Diego Padres and Trevor Story set to miss time after undergoing elbow surgery.
Story's status has been completely up in the air since undergoing surgery. Some have speculated he would miss the first half of the season at most, while others have said he may miss the entire 2023 season. Boston got some good news about Story on Friday, though, as the 30-year-old reportedly began taking ground balls, according to CNHI Sports Boston's Mac Cerullo.
If Story is able to return to the field sooner rather than later, he could be a major piece in helping the club make it back to the postseason in 2023. Boston has plenty of question marks, but there is upside. The Red Sox's starting rotation and bullpen are expected to be significantly improved from 20222 and their offense should be extremely similar.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora gushed at the possibility of Story's return, according to Cerullo.
"It gives you hope, right, if he's not thinking about this year then why take ground balls so soon," Cora said "He's excited, so to take that step it means a lot. I don't want to get way ahead of myself but that's a good first step."
As Cora said, there's no need to get ahead of ourselves yet as Story still will miss a significant chunk of the 2023 campaign. But, if the Red Sox are close in the standings, he may be just what the team needs to make it back to the postseason.
