The Boston Red Sox need to improve the starting rotation and are looking to land the top free-agent pitcher on the market.

Boston has work to do. The Red Sox have won just 78 games in each of the last two seasons but there is real reasons for hope with the franchise. Boston made some positive strides last year and have one of the best farm systems in baseball. If the Red Sox can bolster their rotation this offseason there is a real possibility that they could nab a playoff spot next year. They aren't many pieces away from contention.

The most sought-after free agent pitcher this offseason without a doubt is Orix Buffaloes ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto. He is just 25 years old and will land a massive contract this offseason. Boston has been floated as a possible suitor but the New York Yankees and Mets widely are seen as the favorites to land him. Although this is the case, MassLive.com's Sean McAdam joined the Play Tessie podcast and stated that he believes the Red Sox have a solid chance of landing Yamamoto.

“I actually think they have a pretty good chance of getting him," McAdam said. "When you look at the infrastructure and what they can offer -- and I mean that both financially and what they can offer from their history of having hosted a bunch of Japanese players, many of them pitchers and most of them successful. The fact that (Daisuke Matsuzaka) was willing to pitch the Red Sox and be an ambassador speaks volumes...There are no negatives that stick out to me."

Yamamoto is exactly what Boston needs. The Red Sox need a top-of-the-rotation arm and Yamamoto could be that for years to come. Plus, if Chris Sale can return to form and Brayan Bello can can take another step forward, Boston's rotation could be pretty solid with Yamamoto in the mix.

Boston is sure to have some stiff competition, but it sounds like it really could land the young star this offseason.
