Red Sox Insider On GM Search: 'Nobody Really Wants It'
The Boston Red Sox have continued their search for a new general manager after firing chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom a month ago.
This process, though, has been a tricky one for Boston.
According to MassLive's Sean McAdam, the Red Sox have been met with "a number of rejections by some targeted candidates" as they pursue a new replacement for Bloom.
"There's just this thought that nobody really wants it," MassLive's Chris Cotillo said on the Fenway Rundown podcast regarding the Red Sox's front office vacancy.
"One baseball source described the position as “hard to fill.” A former National League GM said simply: “It’s not viewed as an attractive gig," Cotillo added later in a tweet.
This should definitely be a bit concerning for Red Sox fans as the team absolutely needs to nail this decision if they want to feel any level of confidence with this club in the near and distant future.
Boston has reportedly interviewed other internal candidates as they try to trim down their search to the perfect person for the job. While it seems like manager Alex Cora has taken his name out of the general manager discussion, it is eye-opening how much power team president Sam Kennedy and others are giving Cora without that leader of baseball operations being named yet.
The Red Sox are making important decisions with no GM in place, and I don't quite understand how that makes a whole lot of sense.
Earlier this week pitching coach Dave Bush and third base coach Carlos Febles were fired after being with the organization for 15 years.
These moves being made by a team that lacks a general manager further shows that there are a lot of cooks in the kitchen in the front office and that has to be one of the main reasons the team is receiving rejections from top candidates for the general manager role -- or whichever made up title the new leader of baseball operations is given.
I don't expect much to change in this search over the next few weeks considering the position the Red Sox are inserting the next general manager into, so maybe they will have to do a better job letting candidates know this will actually be their team to guide.
