Will the Boston Red Sox attempt to keep their best homegrown starter in over a decade in town for the long haul by securing a contract extension before he reaches the peak of his powers?

The Red Sox have watched teams like the Atlanta Braves and Chicago White Sox secure discounts for elite players by offering upfront money, and are in line to do the same with Brayan Bello.

Red Sox assistant general manager Eddie Romero was honest when asked if Boston will try to extend Bello for the foreseeable future:

“It’s all case-by-case, there’s no guidebook for it, but I think Brayan is a special case and we’ll make efforts to talk to him and his group,” Romero told The Athletic's Jen McCaffrey. “He’s basically done what he needs to do and what we would want of a young starting pitcher in this organization and he’s gone about it the right way, he’s a great teammate and he’s improved the quality of his repertoire, he’s a very hard worker, and he’s earned the respect of everybody here so he’s the kind we want to stick around obviously.”

Bello has made it clear that he does not want to talk about a contract extension in-season but sounded more than open to the idea once the offseason commences.

“I do want to stay here long-term,” Bello told McCaffrey. “This is the organization that gave me a chance to be somebody so I’d love to stay here.”

Bello is 7-5 with a 3.14 ERA, 75-to-22 strikeout-to-walk ratio, .245 batting average against, 1.20 WHIP and 148 ERA+ in 86 innings across 15 starts.

If he keeps pitching as he has been, the Red Sox will be motivated to do everything they can to sign the 24-year-old for as long as possible.
