Red Sox Officially Cut Ties With Four Former Prospects As Opening Day Quickly Approaches
The Boston Red Sox are not only busy at the big league level.
Opening Day is right around the corner and that means the Red Sox are extremely busy. The club needs to finalize its 26-man roster ahead of Opening Day, but also take a look at its farm system because the minor leagues also are about to kick off.
Boston was busy this week and officially released four former prospects in right-handed pitchers Blake Loubier, Bryan Lucas, and Osvaldo De La Rosa, along with infielder BJ Vela, according to the MiLB Transaction Log.
Loubier, Lucas, and De La Rosa all last played for the Single-A affiliate Salem Red Sox, while Vela played for the Florida Complex League over the last two seasons. Loubier and Vela both were drafted by the Red Sox in the June Amateur Draft in 2019 and 2021 and Lucas and De La Rosa were signed as international free agents.
Loubier began his professional career in the Boston system in 2019 and struggled in 2022 while compiling a 1-3 record 7.43 ERA across 31 appearances out of the Salem bullpen. Lucas began his professional career in 2018 and actually shined in 2022. The righty finished the 2022 season with a 2-1 record and 2.11 ERA in 21 appearances and 42 2/3 innings pitched.
De La Rosa also began his professional career in 2018 and finished the 2022 campaign with a 4.42 ERA in 32 appearances for Salem. Vela began his professional career in 2021 and played 21 games in 2022 and slashed .342/.480/.447.
Boston surely will have plenty more decisions to make -- at the minor league and big league level -- before Opening Day rolls around.
