Red Sox Place Depth Piece On Injured List Following Brutal Collision

Boston will be without a slick defender for at least a week

The Boston Red Sox's middle infield has been a revolving door since Opening Day and continues to be one of the more prominent question marks facing the franchise -- though the addition of Trevor Story helps mightily.

One of the many utility men deployed there this season was Yu Chang, who has been in Triple-A Worcester since his demotion on Aug 8. He won't be a viable option to fill in for the foreseeable future either.

The 28-year-old left Saturday's game after a collision at first base and has since been placed on the 7-day injury list according to the club.

Chang was the primary shortstop for a hefty chunk of the Red Sox's season but has since been buried down the depth chart.

Story's return, the acquisition of Luis Urías at the trade deadline and the sudden emergence of Pablo Reyes were enough to force him off the big-league roster initially.

Now, with the team out of contention, top prospect Ceddanne Rafaela is seeing time up the middle as well as Enmanual Valdez. David Hamilton was called up recently too but already is back in Worcester.

Chang is a plus defender but his bat inhibits him from truly carving out a full-time gig in Major League Baseball. The veteran hit .162 with eight extra-base hits including six home runs, 18 RBIs and a .552 OPS in 39 games this season.

He's a career .204 hitter with solid pop but cannot be relied upon with the bat in his hand. Hopefully, he comes back strong and can find a role in the organization.
