Red Sox 'Remain In Touch' With Free Agent Slugger After Strong Season
The Boston Red Sox need to add another right-handed bat to the lineup before Spring Training rolls around.
Boston has a hole at designated hitter right now. The Red Sox had two-time All-Star Justin Turner in the role last season, but he currently is a free agent and seemingly has a big market of clubs showing interest in him.
While the Red Sox have maintained talks with Turner this offseason about a possible reunion, it's unclear at this point if he will be back in town in 2024.
Another player the Red Sox have been discussing a reunion with is slugger Adam Duvall. The 35-year-old also is a free agent and had a strong season with Boston in 2023. The Red Sox even reportedly "remain in touch" with Duvall about a reunion, according to the Boston Globe's Pete Abraham.
"The Sox remain in touch with free agent Adam Duvall, who had a .834 OPS over 92 games with the Red Sox last season and hit 21 home runs," Abraham said. "Until Tuesday, (Craig Breslow) had not commented on the signing of (Lucas Giolito), which was made official Jan. 3, or the trade for (Tyler O’Neill), which came in early December."
Duvall would make a lot of sense for Boston. He clubbed 21 home runs last season but dealt with injuries. One of the biggest reasons why he makes sense for the Red Sox is the fact that he could provide defense in the outfield.
Boston has said on multiple occasions that it views the designated hitter position as fluid and all of the at-bats won't be from just one player. The Red Sox are looking for defensive flexibility and Duvall would provide that, plus a power bat in the middle of the lineup.
