Red Sox Reportedly Acquire Utility Man From AL West Club To Bolster Organization Depth
The Boston Red Sox certainly are staying busy.
Boston reportedly acquired Oakland Athletics utility man Pablo Reyes in exchange for cash considerations Friday afternoon, according to The San Francisco Chronicle's Matt Kawahara.
While it's likely he won't play a large role with the big league club in 2023, Reyes is an intriguing depth option who likely will see plenty of time with the Triple-A Worcester Red Sox. Reyes began his big league career with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2018 and spent the first two years of his career with the club. In two seasons, Reyes appeared in 89 games for the Pirates and slashed .229/.295/.368 to go along with five home runs and 26 RBIs.
The 29-year-old was suspended for 80 games in 2020 for violating the league's performance-enhancing drug policy and then became a free agent. He joined the Milwaukee Brewers on a minor league contract ahead of the 2021 season. Reyes appeared in 58 games for Milwaukee between the 2021 and 2022 seasons and slashed .258/.330/.344 to go along with one home run, five doubles, and three RBIs.
Although Reyes hasn't spent much time at the big league level, he is an 11-year veteran in the minor leagues and has been impressive. Reyes began his professional career in 2012 with the Pirates' Dominican Summer League team and in 11 years, he has slashed .274/.350/.419 with 67 home runs and 383 RBIs at the minor league level.
In his professional career, Reyes has seen time at second base, shortstop, third base, left field, center field, right field, and designated hitter. Boston has already dealt with many injuries this season, so it makes sense for the club to trade for another player who could help out all over the field. He may play a major role and may not even see time with the big league club, but if the club deals with more injuries and he impresses with Worcester, maybe we will see him at Fenway Park at some point in 2023.
