Red Sox Reportedly 'Contender' To Land Rising Star In Possible Boston Reunion

Boston reportedly could look to bring an old friend back to town this offseason

The Boston Red Sox could bring a familiar face back into the mix this offseason.

Boston's biggest hole on the roster -- like many teams -- is in the starting rotation. The Red Sox have said all of the right things so far this offseason and are widely expected to spend heavily this offseason to improve the rotation. Boston's offense was solid last year, if the Red Sox do add another few starters into the mix, it could be a playoff team in 2024.

One player who reportedly could be a target for the Red Sox in free agency is Eduardo Rodríguez, according to the New York Post's Jon Heyman.

"Eduardo Rodríguez could double the $49M he opted out of, and the (St. Louis Cardinals), Red Sox, and (Philadelphia Phillies) look like possible contenders there," Heyman said. 

Rodríguez spent the first six seasons of his career with the Red Sox before signing with the Detroit Tigers in free agency ahead of the 2022 campaign. The big lefty was impressive with Boston and helped lead the club to the 2018 World Series, but has taken another step forward with the Tigers. Rodríguez dealt with injuries in 2022 and compiled a 4.05 ERA but only was able to make 17 starts. He made 26 starts in 2023 and had a career-best 3.30 ERA.

He likely will get a large contract this offseason but will be cheaper than someone like San Diego Padres star Blake Snell. Boston needs to land multiple starters. Bringing Rodríguez back into the fold while also acquiring a No. 1 starter as well, would be a good place to start.
