Red Sox Reportedly Have 'Checked In' On Premier Free-Agent Reliever
The Boston Red Sox have been very vocal about addressing their offseason needs, with pitching being atop their list of priorities.
So far, the Red Sox's offseason has been filled with rumors and promises of big moves to come -- with a few minor roster moves here and there.
The organization has mostly addressed the club's lack of starting pitching and right-handed bats, however, it now appears that the possible additions might not stop there.
"Sources: The (Houston) Astros have shown continued interest in flame-throwing right-handed pitcher Jordan Hicks, who has a robust market, drawing interest from at least a half-dozen teams including the (Baltimore) Orioles and (Texas) Rangers. The (Los Angeles) Angels and Red Sox have also checked in, I’m told." KPRC2's Ari Alexander reported Tuesday.
Hicks had a 3.29 ERA with an 81-to-32 strikeout-to-walk ratio, a .231 batting average against with a 1.36 WHIP in 65 2/3 innings pitched across 65 games for the Toronto Blue Jays and St. Louis Cardinals last season.
The 27-year-old found himself in Toronto after the Cardinals traded him at the deadline and is now an unrestricted free agent.
While it appears that Hicks to Boston is far from a sure thing, the Red Sox could benefit from adding a high-leverage arm to the back of the bullpen.
Kenley Jansen clamored for a three-headed monster alongside him and Chris Martin -- he could be close to getting his wish.
More likely, however, the Red Sox were just doing due diligence and will potentially circle back if he's still available following the addition of a starting pitcher or two.
