Red Sox Reportedly Linked To Superstar Slugger In Possible Blockbuster Stunner
The Boston Red Sox reportedly could make one of the biggest moves in baseball this upcoming offseason.
Boston will finish the 2023 season below. 500 and in last place in the American League East but the club made some positive strides this year. The Red Sox aren't too far away from making the postseason and if they make a few solid moves this offseason could be back in the playoffs next year.
One intriguing move that reportedly could make sense is a trade for San Diego Padres star Juan Soto, according to USA Today Sports' Bob Nightengale.
"The Padres are internally leaning towards trading All-Star outfielder Juan Soto, which would free up about $30 million – while trying to slash their payroll by about $50 million," Nightengale said. The Padres won’t get nearly the return that they sent to the Washington Nationals two years ago to acquire Soto, but they should get two top-15 prospects in a team’s farm system, besides freeing themselves an arbitration-record payday for Soto.
"The (San Francisco Giants) or the Boston Red Sox could be possible fits while scouts predict that he’ll be a first baseman or (designated hitter) within two years."
This isn't the first time Soto has been mentioned as a possible fit for the Red Sox and a move could make perfect sense. Boston could use another solid bat in the lineup and adding an outfielder makes sense as Alex Verdugo could be traded away this offseason. Soto is one of the best players in baseball already at just 24 years old and would form a fearsome duo with third baseman Rafael Devers.
It's too early to know if a move actually could happen but it certainly is something to look out for.
