Red Sox Reportedly 'May Be Close' To Extension For Young Starter
The Boston Red Sox could end up handing out an extension to one of the club's rising young stars soon.
Boston has been in the news this offseason for the club's lack of moves. The Red Sox still have plenty of work to do and should make at least one or more additions before the 2024 season rolls around.
The Red Sox also have questions about its young core. There has been speculation that the club could look to hand out contract extensions to young players like Brayan Bello and Triston Casas and it sounds like that still could be the case.
It's unclear if a deal will get done, but the Red Sox reportedly have been speaking to Bello's representatives lately and "may be close" to a deal, according to MassLive.com's Chris Cotillo.
"In a conversation Wednesday morning at JetBlue Park, starter Brayan Bello said his agents have been engaged in extension talks with the Red Sox in recent weeks and that a deal may be close between the sides," Cotillo said. "Asked if a deal was indeed close, Bello (through translator Carlos Villoria Benítez), responded “mas o menos” — which translates to “more or less” or “maybe” in English. He also responded “maybe” when asked if a deal could come together before the end of spring training.
"Bello’s hopefulness was evident during the conversation even if details were scarce. He said his representatives have talked with front office members 'in the last few weeks.'"
The young starter certainly was a bright spot for the Red Sox last season. Bello made 28 starts last season and impressed. Boston has struggled to hold on to its homegrown talent but that could be changing.
