Red Sox Rival Reportedly Could Swoop In, Land Rumored Boston Target

It sounds like one of the Red Sox's biggest rivals could land one of their rumored free-agent targets.

The Boston Red Sox still need to add a frontline starter this offseason.

Boston has signed one-time All-Star Lucas Giolito and he has plenty of upside, but the Red Sox traded away Chris Sale and still have one or two openings in the rotation.

One player who has popped up as an option in free agency is 2023 National League Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell, but Boston hasn't gotten a deal done. Snell is looking for a massive contract and Boston has balked at the price.

The Red Sox continues to be linked to Snell, though, so maybe a deal eventually could happen. Boston will have stiff competition for him and one club that reportedly is in the mix for Snell is the Toronto Blue Jays, according to USA Today Sports' Bob Nightengale.

"Cy Young winner Blake Snell continues to seek a contract that will pay him at least $240 million, and now awaits to see what team blinks first," Nightengale said. "The New York Yankees made an introductory offer for nearly $100 million less, which was quickly dismissed before they turned to Marcus Stroman to fill their vacancy with a two-year, $37 million deal.

"While several teams still remain engaged with Snell while seeing if his price-tag drops, the Toronto Blue Jays in particular have been quietly monitoring his free agency."

Snell is a star and could help any club that decides to bring him in. He certainly has some question marks which is why many have scoffed at his asking price, but he is a two-time Cy Young Award winner and is just 31 years old.

Boston should continue to monitor his availability as the club looks to add. If the Red Sox doesn't land him, it sounds like one of their rivals just might.
