Red Sox Star Reportedly To Take Next Step In Rehab; Could Return To Boston Be Imminent?
The Boston Red Sox could have one of their brightest stars back in the lineup in the not-so-distant future.
Middle infielder Trevor Story appeared in just 94 games for the Red Sox last season and has yet to take the field for the club this season. Story underwent offseason elbow surgery and some speculated before the season that he could miss the entire 2023 campaign. The two-time All-Star has been rehabbing all season to this point and reportedly will take another step as he faces live batting practice at Fenway Park, according to MassLive.com's Christopher Smith.
"John Schreiber will face Trevor Story in a live batting practice session Tuesday at Fenway Park," Smith said. 'Twenty-five pitches, live BP,' manager Alex Cora said Sunday before the Red Sox's series finale against the Blue Jays at Rogers Centre. The Red Sox have not yet established a timetable for Story’s return. The shortstop underwent elbow surgery in January.
"Story said on June 12 that he expects to be able to play shortstop for the Red Sox sometime in August. His injury requires a longer buildup for throwing than hitting and so Story said he is preparing for the possibility of being activated as the designated hitter at some point in July."
Story's eventual return to the lineup will be a major lift for a Boston club that is fighting for an American League Wild Card spot. The Red Sox currently are three and a half games behind the Houston Astros for the third AL Wild Card postseason spot. Boston is sure to be busy over the next month with the 2023 MLB Trade Deadline quickly approaching and Story's return will just help.
While there's no official return date scheduled, Story should be back shortly and Red Sox fans should be keeping a close eye on him.
