Red Sox Surprisingly Floated As Possible Landing Spot For Yankees Superstar Next Offseason
One of the biggest storylines in baseball that will be watched closely throughout the 2024 campaign is the future of New York Yankees superstar Juan Soto.
New York arguably made the biggest trade of the offseason by landing Soto, but he will be entering free agency at the end of the season and will land one of the largest contracts in baseball history.
Soto won't land anything close to what Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani got, but it certainly is possible that he could get the second-largest deal in baseball history.
New York should be considered the front-runner to retain Soto, but he will be closely monitored. Bleacher Report's Zachary Rymer compiled a list of the top possible landing spots for him and surprisingly mentioned the Boston Red Sox as an option.
"The Red Sox opened with the highest payroll in (Major League Baseball) in both 2018 and 2019, so they can't blame anyone for wondering what they're doing outside the top 10 these days," Rymer said. "Yet even if it's just for a moment, let's assume that part of what the Red Sox are doing is saving up money as they bide their time. Just waiting for the right moment to make a splash.
"If so, all would be forgiven if Soto is said splash. Simply taking him from the Yankees would be sweet enough, and then there's the prospect of how he would take to Boston. Or Fenway Park, more specifically. It's a welcome environment for left-handed hitters with good opposite-field strokes, and this particular lefty hitter has a 1.085 OPS when going oppo for his career. I'm not saying 'The next David Ortiz,' but I do want you to think it."
Landing Soto would be incredible but certainly surprising. Boston did show interest in both Ohtani and fellow highly-paid free agent Yoshinobu Yamamoto but didn't get a deal done.
Rymer had the Red Sox as the No. 7 landing spot so a deal should be considered unlikely, but it's something to watch for throughout the season.
