The Boston Red Sox have had a lackluster carousel at the shortstop position but that seemingly is about to change.

Trevor Story finally had offseason surgery to repair his right elbow, which has been plaguing him for years. After a long and slow rehab process, the 30-year-old is just days away from game action and Red Sox manager Alex Cora broke down his first few days.

Story will begin his first rehab assignment on Friday, when he will log five innings at shortstop. On Saturday he'll slot in as the designated hitter (presumably for the whole game) before playing another five innings at shortstop on Sunday. He's expected to head to Double-A Portland, as they will be home.

The Red Sox have explained that Story will not be rushed, and likely will approach the maximum allotment of rehab assignments. Position players are not allowed to spend more than 20 days on rehab assignments, meaning his first start with the Red Sox likely will be in the Aug. 5 to Aug. 11 range.

Story's goal was to return by mid-August, and he appears to be right in line to do so barring any setbacks. He hit .238 with 38 extra-base hits with 16 home runs, 66 RBIs and a .737 OPS in 94 games last season while playing Gold-Glove caliber defense.

That type of production would be welcomed by a middle infield that has struggled all season long.

Between the impending returns of Story, Chris Sale, Tanner Houck, Garrett Whitlock and probable trade deadline acquisitions, the Red Sox are surprisingly prepped to make a run for a postseason spot.

Neville spent all four years with Merrimack's radio station WMCK, where he grew as a radio/podcast host and producer.  His propensity for being in front of a microphone eventually expanded to film, where he produced multiple short films alongside his then-roommate and current co-worker Stephen Mottram. On a journey that began as a way to receive easy credits via film classes, he received a call from "It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia" star Charlie Day. Day advised him to make a feature-length film, which he completed his senior year. While writing the film, Neville completed an internship for United Way as part of their NFL Partnership Program. Neville ran the blog for a team of interns and hosted an internet show called "United Way's NFL Partnership Series" where he interviewed NFL alumni. After college Neville wrote for SB Nation's "Over The Monster," a Red Sox sister site of the flagship brand. His work would eventually lead him to a job as a content producer with NESN, where he would cover all sports. After developing as a writer with the top regional network in the world, he was given the opportunity to join the Sports Illustrated Media Group in his current endeavor as the publisher of "Inside The Red Sox." The successful launch and quick rise of "Inside The Red Sox" led to Neville joining the Baseball Essential ownership group, a national baseball site under SIMG.
