Surprising Red Sox Have Done Something This Season Not Done By Club In 20 Years
The Boston Red Sox have had a surprising start to the 2023 season.
Boston is 13-12 through its first 25 games and sits at the bottom of the American League East standings, but has been extremely impressive at times. The Red Sox's struggles mainly have come from their starting pitching, but those issues seem to be improving.
The Red Sox's offense surprisingly has been one of the best in all of baseball, although many speculated it would take a step back this season after losing star shortstop Xander Bogaerts and slugger J.D. Martinez in free agency. Through 25 games, the Red Sox have scored 144 runs -- good for third-most in all of baseball.
Boston's offense not only has been solid in the context of the 2023 season, but the 144 runs scored actually are the most scored by the club through the first 25 games of a season since the club scored 147 in 2003, according to ESPN Stats and Information.
The 2003 Red Sox finished second in the American League East standings with an impressive 95-67 record and was just one win away from making the World Series but fell against the rival New York Yankees in the American League Championship Series in heartbreaking fashion.
Many had low expectations about the Red Sox heading into the 2023 season, but the offense certainly is raising eyebrows. Boston may not win 95 games this season, but it should easily be able to top the 78 games won in 2022. The Red Sox likely won't win the World Series this season, but they have put together an exciting roster and should win plenty of games and maybe even surprise some people.
