The Boston Red Sox are going to have some decisions to make sooner rather than later.

The 2023 MLB Trade Deadline is August 1 and Boston is in an intriguing position. Boston currently is 43-42 and realistically could compete for an American League Wild Card spot if it could string together a few wins. Boston also could hit a rough patch and fall completely out of the postseason race. The Red Sox are in a murky spot. The trade deadline is coming up quickly and the Red Sox will have to decide whether it wants to buy, sell, or some combination of the three very shorty.

Three players that reportedly could make sense to be on the move are slugger Adam Duvall, pitcher Nick Pivetta, and utility man Enrique Hernandez, according to the Boston Globe's Chad Finn.

"The must-move is Duvall," Finn said. "Although he’s struggled since coming back from his wrist injury (.508 OPS, one home run in 19 games) following an Aaron Judge-like start, he’s a legit power threat and steady corner outfielder who ended up being a helpful in-season pickup for the Braves during their run to the 2021 World Series title.

"The Red Sox should be playing the dynamic Duran — who has improved so much at age 26 that it’s almost hard to fathom — in center field every day anyway. If Duvall starts hitting with power again between now and the deadline, he should have plenty of appeal. Also locked into the move ‘em category: Pivetta and Hernández."

While it would be sad to see any of Duvall, Pivetta, or Hernandez go, a move of any of the trio makes sense. Young speedster Jarren Duran has taken a massive step forward and should see more time in center field, which would take time away from Duvall. Hernandez had an opportunity to take over shortstop and struggled so now sees time typically at second base or in center field, but with Duran shining and Trevor Story's eventual return, there won't be much of a role for Hernandez shortly.

Pivetta was moved to the bullpen and has impressed but he likely would like a bigger role than he currently has. There's sure to be a multitude of clubs looking for pitching -- both starting and relief -- ahead of the deadline and Pivetta could bring in a solid haul through trade.

Boston has been in the news lately with plenty of trade rumors. The rumors certainly won't slow down until the deadline passes so keep a close eye on the Red Sox.
