Two Members Of Red Sox Receive Rough Injury News As They Attempt To Get Back To Club
The Boston Red Sox certainly have been bitten by the injury bug so far this season.
Boston entered the 2023 campaign already dealing with a wide range of injuries and they have continued to pile up. The Red Sox entered the season with Brayan Bello, James Paxton, and Garrett Whitlock all injured and although all three are back in the rotation, Boston currently is without the services of star lefty Chris Sale.
The Red Sox also have dealt with injuries to position players. Boston has been without the services of infielder Trevor Story all season, but he should be back this summer. Although the Red Sox have gotten some players back from injuries, the club did receive some rough news about infielder Adalberto Mondesi and pitcher Wyatt Mills, according to the Boston Globe's Pete Abraham.
"(Alex Cora) gave a few injury updates," Abraham said. "Mondesi still not making any progress. Schreiber is throwing out to 75 feet now. Wyatt Mills, who I honestly forgot they had, had a setback. Story is moving forward, but not seeing live pitching yet (which seems like a surprise)."
Mondesi was acquired by the Red Sox as a possible replacement for Story after he suffered an elbow injury this past offseason but has been unable to get on the field yet as he recovers from a torn ACL he suffered in 2022. The speedster appeared in just 15 games last season it doesn't sound like he will be back any time soon. At one point Mondesi seemed like he could be a rising star with the Kansas City Royals but injuries have hampered his career and he has appeared in just 50 games over the last two seasons.
Mills also was acquired by the Red Sox this past offseason. The right-handed pitcher appeared poised to earn a spot in Boston's improved bullpen but suffered an elbow injury and has had multiple setbacks, and has missed the entire season to date so far.
Boston currently is in last place in the American League East at 33-33 but potentially could fight for a postseason berth this season. Mills likely won't play much of a role with the Red Sox, but Mondesi could help if he's able to return to the field at some point. Hopefully, the club in general can get healthier shortly and start to get back on track.
