Who Will Make Final Red Sox Roster? Boston Officially Sends Four Players Down To Minors
The Boston Red Sox certainly are going to have plenty of decisions to make as Opening Day quickly approaches.
Boston has been red-hot to kick off spring training Grapefruit League play and still is undefeated heading into a clash against the Miami Marlins on Sunday afternoon. The Red Sox have gotten impressive play out of expected regulars -- like outfielder Alex Verdugo -- and also have seen some of the organization's top prospects shine.
The Red Sox will have some tough choices when it comes time to pick the active 26-man roster, but Boston got ahead of the ball and optioned four players down to minor league camp Sunday afternoon.
Boston officially sent right-handed pitchers Dan Altavilla and Victor Santos, catcher Elih Marrero, and infielder Matthew Lugo down to minor league camp, according to the club.
Lugo is the most surprising name on this list right now. The 21-year-old certainly is expected to play in the minors this season and is a few years away minimum from making the big league roster, but he's had a solid spring so far and slashed .400/.455/.800 in seven games. He was always going to be sent to the minors but has been solid so far so it's surprising it is this early, especially with plenty of regulars set to play in the World Baseball Classic.
Marrero didn't see much time with the big league club in Grapefruit League action. The catcher unsurprisingly appeared in just two games because Boston has Reese McGuire, Connor Wong, and Jorge Alfaro all fighting for spots on the major league roster.
Neither Altavilla nor Santos made an appearance with the Red Sox in Grapefruit League action before being sent down.
Spring training has gone well so far for Boston, but this is just the beginning of the hard decisions the club will have to make before Opening Day.
