Red Sox Could Place Star Slugger On Injured List Due To Nagging Injury
The Boston Red Sox can't seem to catch a break right now.
Boston had a great start to the 2024 season. The Red Sox were 7-3 to begin the campaign and looked like a club that could surprise some people. Injuries completely have changed the team's outlook, though.
The Red Sox lost starter Lucas Giolito for the campaign before it even began. They recently lost star shortstop Trevor Story for the season as well. Starting pitcher Nick Pivetta was placed on the Injured List, although he shouldn't be out for too long.
Injuries keep piling up and it sounds like another star may end up getting placed on the Injured List too. Red Sox star third baseman Rafael Devers has been dealing with a nagging shoulder injury and an Injured List stint hasn't been ruled out, according to MassLive.com's Chris Cotillo.
"Rafael Devers is still battling his shoulder issue," Cotillo said. "Does he need to go on IL? (Red Sox manager Alex Cora): 'Hopefully not. Let’s see how it goes. But it’s too early to be grinding. That’s how I see it. He’s too important for us for him to be grinding with his swing and making it worse.'"
It's unclear at this time if he will need to have a stint on the Injured List, but the fact that it hasn't been ruled out is concerning. Boston already isn't at full strength and losing Devers for some time could hurt the club even more.
He hasn't appeared in a game with Boston since Cora's comments and likely will miss the club's game on Saturday as well, according to MassLive.com's Christopher Smith.
"Alex Cora said the Red Sox 'probably will stay away' from Rafael Devers again tomorrow," Smith said.
Boston certainly has had some rough luck to begin the 2024 season.
