Red Sox Hurler Makes Team History After Yet Another Brilliant Outing
The Boston Red Sox's starting rotation certainly has been surprising so far this season.
Boston's rotation had plenty of question marks entering the campaign -- especially after losing Lucas Giolito for the year. Many wondered why the Red Sox didn't sign an expensive free-agent option like Jordan Montgomery or Blake Snell as the club decided to roll with internal options.
It seemed like the Red Sox were going to be in a rough spot after a tough 2023 season and much of the same rotation returning, but the club has completely flipped the narrative and actually has had one of the top rotations in baseball to begin the young season.
Although 17 games is a small sample size, the Red Sox's rotation has been great, and one of the biggest reasons why has been the emergence of hurler Kutter Crawford. He earned a spot in the rotation and has been the team's best pitcher so far. He has been so good that he even made team history Monday as he became the first starter in team history to allow one or fewer runs and three or fewer hits in each of his first four starts to begin a season, according to SoxNotes' J.P. Long.
"Kutter Crawford is the only pitcher in Red Sox history (excluding openers) to allow (one) or fewer runs and (three) or fewer hits in each of their first (four) starts of a season," Long said.
Crawford has been lights-out to begin the season. He has allowed just one earned run in 21 1/3 innings pitched and just nine total base hits in four starts. Although four starts is a small sample, he has been just what the Red Sox could have hoped for.
There still is plenty of time left this season, but the club's rotation could surprise people.
