Red Sox Should Consider Reunion With Speedster After Trevor Story Injury News
The Boston Red Sox are in a tough spot.
Boston has gotten off to a hot start to begin the 2024 season but got some devastating news Saturday. Red Sox star shortstop Trevor Story suffered a shoulder injury on Friday night against the Los Angeles Angels and had an MRI on Saturday. Story said the injury was "significant" afterward although they don't have all of the information yet.
The Red Sox should find out more about Story's injury on Monday and in the meantime called up young infielder David Hamilton to provide more depth.
If the Red Sox were to miss Story for the rest of the 2024 season -- or even just a large chunk of the season -- an outside addition could make a lot of sense to bolster positional depth. One player who could make a lot of sense for Boston is speedster Adalberto Mondesí.
Boston acquired Mondesí in a trade with the Kansas City Royals last year to fill in for an injured Story ahead of the 2023 season, but the speedy infielder never was able to make an appearance with the Red Sox due to an injury of his own.
Mondesí is a free-agent and was linked to a few other clubs this past offseason -- including the Miami Marlins -- but still is looking for his next opportunity.
If Story is going to miss a lot of time, a reunion could make sense with Mondesí if he is healthy. Boston already tried the move once, although it didn't work out in 2023. Why not try again if Story is out for a long time?
