Red Sox Star Receives Possibly Devastating News, Surgery Is On Table
The Boston Red Sox certainly have had some rough luck this already this season.
On the bright side, the Red Sox are 7-3 on the young season and are in second place in the American League East. While the club's performance has been stellar so far this season, Boston has been bitten by the injury bug in a major way.
Boston lost top free-agent addition Lucas Giolito before the campaign even began and the club recently lost star shortstop Trevor Story after dislocating his shoulder diving for a ground ball against the Los Angeles Angels.
It's uncertain exactly how much time Story will miss, but surgery reportedly is possible, according to the Boston Globe's Alex Speier.
"Cora on Trevor Story: 'There’s concern with the bone structure,'" Speier said. "Surgery possible. He’s going to see ElAttrache in (Los Angeles). Cora says the Sox will platoon at (second base) and (shortstop) with Romy González in the mix at SS with (David Hamilton). Vaughn Grissom will play some SS on his rehab assignment."
The fact that Story is going for a second opinion and there is possible damage to the bone structure could be a sign that bad news is on the way. If he needs surgery, there's a chance he will miss the rest of the 2024 season.
Until the club confirms this, there always is a chance that Story could return in the not-so-distant future, but damage to the bone structure could be devastating.
Boston has been solid so far this season but it sounds like it may need to find a full-time replacement for the star shortstop.
