The Boston Red Sox could get an intriguing player back very soon.

Boston traded starter Chris Sale to the Atlanta Braves during the offseason in a surprise move for infielder Vaughn Grissom. The Red Sox have had trouble at second base in recent years but the deal for Grissom seemed to answer all of the club's questions at the position.

Grissom likely will be the club's second baseman for the foreseeable future but he hasn't been able to get into any action yet as he's dealt with a hamstring strain. The 23-year-old should play a major role with the club when he's fully healthy and it sounds like he's progressing and should be able to return to action soon, according to MassLive.com's Christopher Smith.

"Manager Alex Cora said (on) March 17 that second baseman Vaughn Grissom might be able to return from the injured list by mid-to-late April," Smith said. Is that still attainable? 'Yeah, that’s where we’re at right now,' (Red Sox manager Alex Cora) said before the Red Sox’ game against the Athletics at Oakland Coliseum on Monday.

"Cora is unsure if Grissom will play in any extended spring training games (or minor league rehab games) before arriving in Boston next week. He will need to receive a lot of at-bats in rehab games before being ready after not playing in any Grapefruit League games. A minor league rehab assignment for a position player can be at most 20 days."

The fact that there is a chance that he could be ready to return around mid-to-late April is a great sign for the Red Sox. Grissom is young but already has found some success at the big league level. When he's ready, he should be able to give the Red Sox's offense a boost and it sounds like he isn't far off.
