The Boston Red Sox seemingly were linked in some sort of way to every big-name pitcher who was available this past offseason.

Boston ended up only signing Lucas Giolito as the only major addition to the starting rotation but he will miss the entire 2024 season. Luckily, things have worked out for the Red Sox so far as the rotation actually has been one of the best in baseball.

While this is the case, it does sound like Boston did really try to make at least one more addition. The Red Sox consistently were linked to former New York Yankees, St. Louis Cardinals, and Texas Rangers ace Jordan Montgomery.

Montgomery would've been a great pickup and the Red Sox reportedly wanted to give him a long-term deal, but he ultimately didn't want to come to Boston, according to the New York Post's Jon Heyman.

"One thing that went unnoticed in Jordan Montgomery’s $25M contract is that because it was completed after the season started, the (Arizona Diamondbacks) can’t give him the qualifying offer," Heyman said. Monty could have gotten a longer deal from the Red Sox but didn’t want to go there, and was hoping Texas would give him the long deal until ownership decided against it late, likely related to the loss of their TV deal."

It was rumored that Montgomery wanted a deal comparable to what the Philadelphia Phillies gave Aaron Nola, but he ended up settling for a significantly smaller, short-term deal. It sounds like Boston would've at least given him a long-term deal, but it wasn't in the cards.
