CINCINNATI — The Cincinnati Reds added top prospects Rece Hinds, Jacob Hurtubise, and Christian Roa to the 40-man roster on Tuesday.

The move is to protect them from the Rule 5 Draft in December. Hinds is the No. 10 ranked prospect according to MLB Pipeline. This move doesn’t mean his MLB debut is imminent, though.

Hinds, 23, spent the entire 2023 season at Double-A Chattanooga. He had 23 home runs and 98 RBI in 461 plate appearances.

Hinds has Herculean power. Some scouting grades have his game power potential at All Star levels. Suffice to say, he may be able to hit the Tundra one day.

He does have a couple of questions he will need to answer this next season: plate discipline and health. He struck out 32.8% of the time last year in Chattanooga and that was an improvement on his 39% strikeout rate in Dayton. He also has a below average walk rate. He will need to reduce his reputation for being a free-swinger.

Last year was the first time Hinds had ever played more than 100 games since he was drafted in the second round of the 2019 amateur draft. He was limited to 79 games in 2022 due to a broken hamate bone and only played 54 games in 2021 because of a torn meniscus and a quad injury. He was drafted out of high school in 2019 and did not see time at Prasco in 2020.

Hinds will likely spend 90-100% of next season in Triple-A Louisville. The Reds will need to see an uptick in plate discipline before they move him to the majors. He has tremendous potential to be a power dependent corner outfielder. He just needs to show he won’t fall victim to bad pitches on a greater-than-regular basis before he can be trusted in the big league lineup.

Hurtubise, 25, has been in the Reds organization for three years and made it to Triple-A Louisville last season.

Roa, 24, also made it to Triple-A in 2023. Both will have a chance to make the big league roster next year for the Reds, but neither carries the hype that Hinds brings to the club.
