Jonathan India Hoping to Sharpen Outfield Skills in Spring Training After Limited Offseason Due to Foot Injury

The Reds signed India to a two-year contract extension last week.

CINCINNATI — The Reds are hoping former National League Rookie of the Year Jonathan India can develop into a versatile chess piece this season.

They signed him to a two-year extension last week, despite not knowing exactly where he'll play on a day-to-day basis.

Elly De La Cruz and Matt McLain will start at shortstop and second base, respectively. That means India has to learn how to be an effective outfielder if he wants to get regular playing time.

The 27-year-old is embracing the new role and wants to become a good outfielder. There's only one problem: He couldn't hone his skills this offseason.

India was limited by plantar fasciitis injury last season, which included a stint on the injury list. He played through the pain in September. His goal was to get to 100% this offseason, which meant plenty of rest and not as much training as he hoped.

“It didn’t feel right all offseason, but I’m back to where I feel good again," India told Charlie Goldsmith of the Cincinnati Enquirer. "I’m well ahead of schedule. I’m taking this slow, though. I’m taking this seriously. But I’m in a good spot.”

Hopefully he'll be able to get as many reps as he needs in the outfield between now and Opening Day.

India is an important piece of the team, especially if he can be a competent outfielder. It's one of the many questions that have yet to be answered about the 2024 Cincinnati Reds.
