Cincinnati Reds Crush Washington Nationals in 8-2 Opening Day Win Opening Day Contest
The Reds beat the Nationals 8-2 on Thursday at Great American Ballpark. It was a dominant Opening Day performance in front of 44,030 fans.
Frankie Montas got the start for Cincinnati, tossing six shutout innings. He gave up four hits, but had tremendous command on the mound, throwing 81 total pitches. Montas didn't issue any walks and had about as good of a Reds debut as anyone could've hoped for—especially after being named the Opening Day starter.
Nick Martini led the way at the plate, hitting home runs in each of his first two at-bats to help the Reds build a 7-0 lead in the third inning. His first home run was a two-run shot in the second inning. He followed that up with a three-run homer in the third. Watch both home runs here.
Spencer Steer had the first RBI of the game, hitting a single to right field. Jake Fraley scored to give Cincinnati a 1-0 lead. Marini followed that up with his two-run homer and the Reds never looked back.
The Nationals ended the shutout when Eddie Rosario hit a two-run homer off of Emilio Pagan in the seventh.
Cincinnati native Brent Suter made his Reds debut in the eighth. He struck out the side on Opening Day. What a debut for Suter.
Elly De La Cruz scored after hitting a single in the eighth and the Reds picked up their first win of the season. Suter pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to seal the deal for the home team.
