As protests over the killing of George Floyd at the hands of a police officer in Minneapolis on May 25 sweep the nation—and calls for the end of systematic racism and oppression grow louder every day—sports teams and players are getting involved in calls for change.

The Cincinnati Bearcats baseball team is pushing that their stadium is renamed. The stadium is currently named after former Reds owner Marge Schott. However, she was banned from MLB for numerous racist incidents.

Here's the full video transcript:

Robin Lundberg: Sports continue to play a major role in the country’s current push for significant change. And as we’ve seen a call to take down monuments that to many represent hate, we now have the Cincinnati Bearcats baseball team pushing for a name change of their stadium. It was named after former Reds owner Marge Schott, because of a $2 million gift she left to the university when she died. But through a petition started by outfielder Jordan Ramey, that now has more than 3,000 signatures, that money is not going to be enough to allow association with Schott to slide.

The petition reads in part: "Marge Schott Stadium is represented by players of all races, religious backgrounds, and ethnicities, and plays host to middle and high school baseball teams as well. The field is getting national attention every year and to promote somebody so racist is not only irresponsible, but it is also directly contradictory to the University's mission statement…"

Schott was banned from Major League Baseball for numerous racist incidents...

I’d expect something similar to happen soon when it comes to her name and the Bearcats stadium.
