Aaron Hicks Unsure of Role With Yankees
After the first three games of the season, Yankees outfielder Aaron Hicks is already frustrated about his lack of playing time.
In the Yankees' Opening Day series with the San Francisco Giants, Hicks didn't start any games and was limited to just one plate appearance, in which he struck out.
According to Brendan Kuty of The Athletic, manager Aaron Boone said Hicks' role would be "a little bit of everything."
However, Hicks says he doesn't know what his role on the team is.
Per The Athletic:
I have no idea what my role is. It’s kind of uncertain.
I just want to play. I don’t want to come off the bench and face closers all day. I want to play the field, I want to play every day, and it’s just what I want to do. I want to start. I really don’t know what else to say.
…if you would have told me (in spring training) that I wouldn’t have started the first three games, I wouldn’t have believed you. But it is what it is. But there’s nothing I can do about it. Just sit around and wait for my opportunity and try my best.
After signing a seven-year, $70 million deal prior to the 2019 season, Hicks has struggled, slashing .220/.334/.367 with 30 homers, 32 doubles, 111 RBI, and 136 runs scored.
Hicks had a solid Spring Training, slashing .293/.408/.390 in 41 at-bats, but he was ultimately beat out for the left field job by Oswaldo Cabrera.
Boone said Hicks will likely get into the lineup in the next couple days, but that remains to be seen. Regardless, he has been demoted to a bench role and he is not too happy about it.
