Angels Seen As Favorites To Sign Yankees' Free Agent Target Despite Rumors
The New York Yankees may not end up signing one of the club's rumored free-agent targets.
New York has been looking for ways to improve its starting rotation and has been linked to two-time Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell on numerous occasions.
Although a move has been seen as unlikely, there has been rumored interest on both sides. New York still has some work to do, but it seems like Snell may not end up landing with the club.
The Los Angeles Angels reportedly are seen as the favorites to sign Snell at this point, according to USA Today Sports' Bob Nightengale.
"The Los Angeles Angels continue to be the favorite to land free-agent starter Blake Snell, who’s willing to sign a short-term contract with opt-outs," Nightengale said. "Angels owner Arte Moreno has yet to sign off on a big free-agent purchase after being burned in past years."
Signing Snell would go a long way for the Yankees but a move isn't likely at this point. Snell is one of the best pitchers in baseball but would cost the Yankees a fortune due to heavy tax implications.
Los Angeles has plenty of money to spend and a real need in the starting rotation after losing two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani. It's surprising that Snell somehow still is available in free agency with Opening Day right around the corner, but it does sound like he could end up signing soon. While this is the case, it doesn't sound like he will land in New York.
