Blue Jays Seen As Possible Landing Spot For Yankees' Superstar Juan Soto
Will the New York Yankees be able to hang on to superstar slugger Juan Soto?
New York completed the largest trade of the offseason when it landed Soto, but he will be a free agent at the end of the 2024 season. The Yankees certainly want to retain him for the foreseeable future but will have to wait until free agency to do so.
Soto will be entering free agency and it's clear there will be plenty of other teams who will show interest in the young superstar. One team that has been floated as one of the top landing spots for him is the Toronto Blue Jays by Bleacher Report's Zachary Rymer.
"It's as if the Blue Jays recognized that their lineup needed a left-handed slugger," Rymer said. "They got only 57 home runs from lefty hitters in 2023. A third of those came from Brandon Belt, who's now a free agent.
"This issue figures to be there all over again after the 2024 season, only this time the Blue Jays will only have to come up with the right cash offer to land Soto. To this end, having Justin Turner, Kevin Kiermaier, Yusei Kikuchi, and Yimi García come off the books will open up $39.8 million in payroll space. Or, about what Soto could earn annually in a 13-year deal."
Rymer put together a list of the top landing spots for Soto and had the Blue Jays at number three. The New York Mets were listed in the top spot followed by the Yankees at No. 2.
