While the New York Yankees seemingly are out of playoff contention this season, it's never too early to look ahead to next year.

New York currently is in last place in the American League East with a disappointing 64-68 record. The Yankees very well could finish below .500 this season, but that doesn't mean they won't be back in contention for a World Series title in 2024. New York likely will be one of the most active clubs in free agency this upcoming offseason.

The Yankees likely will be in the market for at least one new starting pitcher and the club could get a head start if it decided to add more salary right now. The Los Angeles Angels reportedly placed former All-Star Lucas Giolito on waivers Tuesday night, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan.

"BREAKING: The Los Angeles Angels have placed starter Lucas Giolito, relievers Matt Moore and Reynaldo López, and outfielders Hunter Renfroe and Randal Grichuk on waivers, sources tell ESPN," Passan said. "Huge potential playoff implications: All can be claimed by teams for free on Thursday."

A move may be unlikely for the Yankees, but it still could make sense. Giolito will be a free agent at the end of the season so if the Yankees could bring him in now, they could get a closer look at the righty to see if they want to sign him beyond this season. New York may not be in the market to add new salaries on the books. Plus, the Yankees aren't at the top of the waiver order and may not even have a chance to nab Giolito. Although this is the case, New York at least should consider a move.
