Ex-Yankees Slugger Reportedly Available; Should Club Consider Reunion To Boost Ailing Offense?

Should the Yankees consider a reunion with a former home run champion?

One former member of the New York Yankees reportedly is becoming a free agent.

Former Yankees slugger Luke Voit signed a minor-league contract with the New York Mets earlier this season but reportedly is opting out of the deal and becoming a free agent once again as he looks for an opportunity at the big-league level, according to Metsmerized Online Editor-in-Chief Mike Mayer.

"Luke Voit has opted out of his contract with the Mets," Mayer said. "He had 14 home runs in 37 games with Triple-A Syracuse."

Voit has had a roller coaster of a season this year, to say the least. The slugger initially signed a minor league deal with the Milwaukee Brewers. He then opted out of the deal and signed a big league deal with Milwaukee and eventually was designated for assignment after 22 games after struggling. He then latched on with the Mets on a minor league deal and has been red-hot ever since. Voit appeared in 37 games for the Triple-A Syracuse Mets and clubbed 14 home runs and drove in 35 runs while slashing .264/.415/.643.

The 32-year-old joined the Yankees during the 2018 season and remained with the club through the 2021 campaign. Over that stretch, Voit showed some serious offensive pop and even led the American League in home runs during the 2020 COVID-shortened 60-game campaign with 22 long balls.

New York's offense has been anemic lately and the club could use a little firepower. The Yankees didn't address its offensive needs ahead of the 2023 Major League Baseball Trade Deadline so maybe a reunion could make sense. Voit shined in the Mets' farm system. Maybe adding him on a minor-league deal and seeing if the momentum can carry over would make sense. If the Yankees did this, there wouldn't be much risk. If he shined in the minors he could be a solid big-league depth piece who already has experience with the club. If he struggled, it wouldn't impact the big-league club. Maybe New York should look into a move.
