Former MVP Reportedly 'Most Obvious' Target For Yankees This Offseason
The New York Yankees are sure to spend big this offseason.
New York has plenty of room for growth after winning just 82 games in 2023 and needs to fill some holes on the roster if the club wants to be considered World Series contenders again. The club hasn't won a World Series since 2009 and needs to make a major splash to get back to that level of play.
One player who constantly has been mentioned as a fit for New York and likely will continue to do so is Chicago Cubs star Cody Bellinger, according to the New York Post's Jon Heyman.
"Anyway, the reality is their last World Series title followed monster winter expenditures for Mark Teixeira, CC Sabathia, and A.J. Burnett," Heyman said. "So while we applaud their willingness to listen to an outside agency (and their two megastars), their proven route to their usual postseason spot remains free agency.
"To that end, the most obvious free agent to pursue remains Cody Bellinger, in a market short of obvious offensive stars. Bellinger should be top-10 MVP for a third time (he won it with the Dodgers), he’s an elite, versatile defender and left-handed. Though pitching upgrades are needed, the offense is the real issue. It doesn’t take a high-priced auditor to know that."
At the end of the day, the Yankees need more offense. The rotation needs a lift as well, but the Yankees' offense mightily struggled in 2023. Bellinger could provide a much-needed left-handed bat who could help shore up the middle of the order. The 28-year-old returned to form this season for Chicago and finished the year with 26 home runs, 97 RBIs, and an impressive .307/.356/.525 slash line. He has been mentioned as a fit for New York and will continue to do so until he either joins the club or signs elsewhere.
