Gerrit Cole Shares His One Goal For New York Yankees Season
The New York Yankees season is underway and it's an exciting time for the fan base. Fans have been eager to get their Yankees back after a horrible 2023 season.
If there was one person who shouldn't get any of the blame for last year's disappointing showing, it's Gerrit Cole.
Cole posted a 2.63 ERA with 222 strikeouts in 209 innings pitched. He was lights out, winning the Cy Young Award for the first time in his 11-year career.
He spoke about his goals for the upcoming season, saying that his focus is on winning a World Series, not winning another Cy Young.
Cole had the following to say, according to Bryan Hoch of MLB.com:
"It's obviously a really special honor, and I'm very thankful to be able to represent the Yankees and my teammates in receiving that award. With that said, [a second Cy Young] is not on the goal list. To go out there and prepare to win a world championship, that's really at the top of the list."
As long as every other player on the roster has this type of mindset, the Yankees should be in a good position.
New York will have an opportunity to prove that they want to win it all starting now. Winning a World Series takes a team effort and Cole clearly understands that.
It's tough to call it a do-or-die year in terms of winning a World Series.
If the Yankees ended up losing in Game 7 of the ALCS, most would still keep their jobs.
However, if they have the season they had in 2023, major changes will be on the horizon.
Outside of Cole, Aaron Judge, and the hopeful Juan Soto signing, every player would likely be expendable unless they have impressive 2024 seasons.
In terms of the front office and coaches, changes would be needed, too.
