Giants Seen As 'Best Fit' For Rumored Yankees Free Agent Target
The San Francisco Giants already have made some intriguing additions this offseason but it wouldn't be surprising if they made another major splash soon.
The free agent market has moved extremely slowly this offseason. Two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani was the top free agent available and unsurprisingly a handful of teams put their full focus on him and didn't look elsewhere until he signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Former Orix Buffaloes ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto was the next biggest star free agent and teams fully focused on him as well. Many expected the free agent market to pick up after Yamamoto signed, but there still are some big-name players again.
The New York Yankees have been linked to a handful of stars. One player who popped up as an option for the Yankees at one point this offseason is four-time Gold Glove Award winner Matt Chapman.
While this is the case, he likely won't land with the Yankees. San Francisco currently is viewed as the "best fit" to land Chapman, according to MLB.com's Mark Feinsand.
"Chapman’s market has been relatively quiet this offseason, though several teams have been connected to the third baseman at various points of the winter," Feinsand said. "The Giants – who were also mentioned as a serious (Cody Bellinger) suitor prior to their signing of Jung Hoo Lee – are the team many consider to be the best fit for Chapman, a four-time Gold Glove winner and the 2019 AL Platinum Glove winner."
New York may be done adding expensive contracts this offseason unless a deal is possibly for a pitcher. Chapman would've been a solid pickup for New York, but a move is significantly unlikely.
