MLB Insider Says Top New York Yankees Trade Target '100 Percent' Likely to be Dealt
It sounds like this superstar will be available.
The New York Yankees love San Diego Padres superstar outfielder Juan Soto, and have already checked in on his availibility this offseason.
Well, according to ESPN insider Buster Olney, Soto will "100 percent" be traded this winter.
Soto is entering the final year of his contract in 2024 and the Padres are trying to slash payroll.
Olney told The Michael Kay Show on Friday that Soto will "absolutely" be dealt prior to the final year of his deal.
In his final year of arbitration, Soto is projected to make a total of $33 million next season.
According to Jim Bowden of The Athletic, the Padres have talked to Soto about an extension, but the sides aren't close to an agreement.
Soto slashed .275/.410/.519 with 35 home runs and led the National League with 132 walks last season.
Despite having a payroll of $255 million in 2023, the Padres had a disappointing season, finishing with a record of 82-80.
Earlier this month, The Athletic reported that the Padres took out a $50 million loan to help cover the costs of their payroll.
"All you have to do is look at the math," Olney said. "If, in fact, the Padres are going to get their payroll down to $200 million, to $220, which would be a massive reduction, they're going to have to make a move with Soto."
Per Olney, Soto is the most "logical" trade target for the Yankees, who have already expressed interest in the young superstar.
While Padres general manager A.J. Preller told reporters that the team's first path is to extend Soto, Bowden reported that San Diego will listen to trade offers on the outfielder.
The Yankees are coming off an 82-80 season of their own, in which they missed out on the postseason for the first time since 2016.
New York needs more star power to complement Aaron Judge and Gerrit Cole. By acquiring Soto, the Yankees would be filling a major need with a left-handed hitting outfielder, while also creating a lethal duo in the middle of the order with Soto and Judge.
