Yankees Acquire ex-Red Sox Pitcher in Trade
The Yankees have added another pitcher to their staff.
Following their 5-0 Opening Day victory on Thursday, the Yankees announced they've acquired right-handed pitcher Colten Brewer from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for cash considerations.
Brewer signed a minor league contract with the Rays back in December. He spent the entirety of Spring Training with the Rays, throwing 9.1 scoreless innings with 15 strikeouts.
While it was an initial possibility that Brewer could get the final spot in the Yankees' bullpen, as the team went with a seven-man bullpen and five-man bench in their first game, he is on the Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders' Opening Day roster.
Brewer has not appeared in the major leagues since 2021. He spent three seasons with the American League East rival Boston Red Sox from 2019-2021.
In 2019, Brewer posted a 4.12 ERA in 58 appearances for the Red Sox. However, he has only pitched in 12 big-league games since that season.
This will actually be the 30-year-old's second stint with the Yankees organization, as he was a Rule 5 draft pick after the 2016 season and spent 2017 in their farm system.
