New York Yankees Acquire Reliever From Chicago White Sox
The New York Yankees have been one of the best teams, if not the best, to start the 2024 season.
They went on the road and swept their rival Houston Astros in a four-game series, something that not many people expected especially after Gerrit Cole hit the 60-day injured list.
Starting out 4-0 is great for a team with massive expectations placed upon them after missing the playoffs in 2023 and deciding to be aggressive by trading for Juan Soto in a blockbuster deal this offseason.
But, even amongst the jubilation after these performances, there is still some concern surrounding this pitching staff because of the injury to Cole. The Yankees will have to use multiple players to replace the production their ace left behind.
Because of that, New York's front office decided to add some more depth to their organization.
Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports they have acquired reliever Jake Cousins in a trade with the Chicago White Sox, sending back cash considerations in the deal.
The right-hander has pitched in the MLB the past three seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers, but he's seen his usage diminish since 2021 when he appeared in 30 games and posted an ERA of 2.70.
In 2022 he was limited after being placed on the 60-day injured list in the summer because of a UCL injury. He decided to turn down Tommy John surgery and received platelet-rich plasma injection treatment instead, allowing him to return later that year.
Still, he only appeared in 21 games the past two seasons after spending the majority of his time with the Brewers' Triple-A affiliate before being placed on waivers in 2023.
Cousins was claimed by the Astros and was most recently part of the White Sox organization before being dealt to the Yankees.
He probably won't factor in to their bullpen much this year barring injury setbacks, but this adds depth to their pipeline that can be called upon if needed.
