New York Yankees Call-Up Former Top Prospect to Bolster Bullpen
The New York Yankees are calling up a fresh arm to help bolster their bullpen.
On Thursday, the Yankees brought up right-hander Deivi Garcia from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and optioned Randy Vazquez.
Vazquez started for the Yankees on Wednesday, delivering five shutout innings against the Baltimore Orioles in a no-decision.
Vazquez, the Yankees' No. 12 ranked prospect, has been more than solid in three starts this season, posting a 1.17 ERA and 1.04 WHIP with 10 strikeouts in 15.1 innings. But it is unknown when he will be needed again with Carlos Rodon set to return from a forearm strain and back tightness.
As for Garcia, who was once a top prospect for the Yankees himself, he has transformed from a starter to a middle reliever.
Garcia made an appearance for the Yankees on May 10 against the Oakland Athletics, in which he gave up one run across three innings.
In 34.2 innings for Scranton this season, Garcia has a 4.93 ERA and 1.67 WHIP to go along with 34 strikeouts.
With the loss of Jimmy Cordero for the remainder of the season due to a violation of the league's domestic violence policy, Garcia could be auditioning for a spot in the Yankee bullpen as a middle reliever.
