New York Yankees Considering Several Former MLB Managers for Bench Coach Job
With the New York Yankees filling their hitting coach vacancy on Monday by hiring James Rowson, their next priority is to add a bench coach.
Manager Aaron Boone lost his bench coach of the last four seasons in Carlos Mendoza, who was hired as the next manager of the New York Mets.
Now, the Yankees have been looking at a number of names, who hold prior experience managing in the big-leagues.
According to The Athletic, the Yankees are considering former big-league managers Brad Ausmus and Luis Rojas for their bench coach vacancy. Former Yankees pitcher Andrew Bailey is also in the mix for the job.
Ausmus, a former big-leaguer, managed the Detroit Tigers (2014-2017) and Los Angeles Angels (2019) for a total of five seasons combined, but only has one postseason appearance to show for it.
Rojas has spent the past two seasons as the Yankees' third base coach after he was fired as the manager of the Mets after two seasons.
Bailey, 39, pitched for eight seasons in the major leagues and has been the San Francisco Giants' pitching coach for the last four seasons.
The Yankees also reached out to David Ross, who was recently let go by the Chicago Cubs in favor of Craig Counsell, but Ross only wishes to pursue managing opportunities.
New York has a ton of holes to fill on their roster this winter after missing out on the postseason for the first time since 2016. That being said, they are going to need to get their coaching staff squared away as well.
